UV-C vs Water Filtration: What's the Difference?

Short answer: they solve different problems. UV‑C inactivates susceptible microorganisms when it delivers enough dose — but removes nothing from the water. Filtration removes whatever its specific media and certification cover — particulates, chlorine, taste, certain chemicals — but most bottle filters don't disinfect. Marketing that blurs the two is a red flag.

Why the distinction matters when buying
A UV-C bottle with real dose delivery can keep already-drinkable water fresher and reduce susceptible microbes — but it will do nothing about lead, PFAS, or sediment. A carbon filter bottle can improve taste and reduce chlorine — but pouring pond water through it does not make the microbes safe. Neither technology should be described generically: a filter's claims are only as good as the specific media and the specific certification behind them, and a UV claim is only as good as its organism, dose, and test protocol.
Where QuBottle stands
Engineered QuBottle uses in-straw UV‑C treatment, with independent organism-specific validation being commissioned. QuBottle does not currently claim chemical or particulate filtration — and we'd rather say that plainly than borrow filtration language UV-C hasn't earned. Full status on the Evidence Center.
